Despite the fact that it has been available for nearly 50 years, many women know little about the side effects of the birth control pill. Some are effects that doctors might not bother sharing, and others are just being discovered.
Doctors rend to focus on the major side effects that can pose a health risk, such as the risk of blood clots among smokers, high blood pressure, and stroke. But there are other side effects from that don’t always make it into the doctor’s talk.
Women on the pill may suffer a lackluster sex drive, mood swings, or even extra sinus pressure — the pill can affect mucus production both in the cervix and the nose. Recently, researchers found another strange connection between the birth control pill and a woman’s nose. They found that the pill may even change whether women find a man’s scent sexually attractive. Women on the pill may also experience heartburn, constipation, and sleep disturbances.
